What is a Climbing Rally?
Climbing rallies began more than 20 years ago in Peñón de Ifach, and have become an annual tradition among fans of this sport. They have spread to emblematic places such as Riglos, El Chorro, La Cabrera, Leiva and, for some years now, Montanejos. This year, our municipality hosts the Montanejos Climbing Rally 2024.
This is a sports competition that challenges participants to climb as many multi-pitch routes as possible in a period of 10 hours.
The main objective is… to enjoy the Rally! If you come to compete, you should know that each route has points according to length, exposure and difficulty, and the objective is to accumulate the most points in 10 hours. You can download the official sketches here.
But the Destino Climbing organization insists that it is not necessary to come to compete. Many of the attendees come simply for the good atmosphere that is breathed on the walls during the celebration of these events. Even if you don’t add more than one or two routes, you will have a wonderful day of climbing and share great moments with more climbers.
The Montanejos Climbing Rally 2024 will be held on Saturday, December 14 from 10am to 6pm. It was planned for November, but was postponed due to the DANA.
What do I have to take into account to participate in the Montanejos Climbing Rally 2024?
About the start of the test and the score:
• You must bring your necessary climbing equipment.
• The Rally is from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (10 hours): To score the last completed route, you must reach the initial starting point before 6:01 p.m.
• As the first route, each team will have the one they have chosen in the draw. You cannot change or transfer the turn.
• Repeating routes will not score.
• Skipping the route will mean that the lowest route in points will score.
About the area and the routes:
• The routes will be climbed according to the Rally sketches and not according to the original sketches. The sketches made exclusively for the Rally may not coincide with the original layouts of the routes.
• The routes that begin on the nearby Walls or Alguacil Wall and that have continuity on the Walls above must be climbed in their entirety, therefore they cannot be split or combined from the ledge.
• If the Maimona ravine is flooded, the main access to the Alguacil Wall would be along the Cinglos de los Castillejos path, passing through the Placas al Sol sector.
• The use of the CV-20 road, from the Fuente de los Baños to the Cirat Dam, is prohibited, under immediate disqualification of the team. The indicated paths will be used for this purpose.
• In exposed approaches and descents that are protected with ropes and handrails, their use will be mandatory through two anchor points by the user. Failure to comply will result in disqualification of the team.
About the material and the technique:
• It is mandatory to wear a helmet throughout the test.
• Simultaneous rappelling is not allowed.
• Climbing in assembly is not allowed.
• The pole or rod cannot exceed 60 cm (Pánic model).
• Climbing will be done with double ropes of 60 m each.
• The use of any type of blocker that allows ascending by fixed rope is not allowed.
• All insurance must be put in each pitch.
• It is not allowed to overtake another team without their consent. The overtaken team must remain without climbing until both members of the other team have passed.
• Only the routes that are indicated for this will be rappelled, the others will be walked down.
About the couple:
• All routes will be climbed entirely by a first and a second of the team.
• The complete team has to finish the route, that is, the two members have to reach the last meeting.
• Changing partners during the Rally is prohibited.
Exceptions:
• The Organization reserves the right to disqualify any team that makes strange movements on the wall.
• The Organization may change the score of the routes at any time before the test for the reasons it deems appropriate, notifying the participants.
