Montanejos

Montanejos, a charming village in the province of Castellón, is declared a “Thermal Villa” for its waters with mineral-medicinal properties of public utility since 1863.

Enjoying leisure time in the “Thermal Villa of Montanejos” is much more than rural tourism; it is an opportunity to enjoy your free time in an environment linked to health, tranquility, nature, tradition, culture, sports, gastronomy, shopping, and endless attractions where you can enjoy a fantastic experience.

With just over 570 inhabitants and located 418 meters above sea level, it has an area of 37.8 km² of mountainous territory of high natural and scenic richness in the vicinity of the “Sierra de Espadán Natural Park.” It is 65 km from Castellón, 89 km from Valencia and 75 km from Teruel.

The influx of water allows a total of 55 springs to be found in this area, one of the most important attractions in Montanejos being the “Fuente de Baños Thermal Spring,” whose mineral-medicinal waters of public utility since 1863, have multiple curative properties, especially for kidney, digestive system, and skin ailments. This spring contributes 6,000 liters per minute to the Mijares River at a stable temperature of 25°C, and you can pleasantly enjoy them in the river’s natural pools. Likewise, the Spa is a therapeutic establishment that uses water brought directly from the same spring where you can enjoy its hydrothermal and complementary techniques.

The town center: is very interesting with typical whitewashed houses of Arab tradition. Also of interest is a circular defensive tower, the church of Santiago Apóstol from the 17th century, and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, located in La Alquería de Montanejos.

Gastronomy: Typical dishes such as olla, “la fridura”, potaje, homemade preserves, gachas, pork products, saffron milk caps or “rebollones”, olive oil.

Desserts such as mantecados, quince, tortas, fig bread, etc., make Montanejos one of the places where eating is one of the most authentic pleasures.

Festivals and traditions of Montanejos:

San Antonio: The weekend closest to January 16, the eve of the festival of San Antonio Abad, numerous bonfires are made throughout the town and around which tasty dinners are held. The following day, the day of San Antón, after the main mass, many activities are carried out for the youngest. In the afternoon, the procession, the blessing of animals, the distribution of the traditional rolls of charity (blessed bread) among those present, and a popular snack bring the festival to an end.

Pilgrimage: On May 1st it is customary to go on a pilgrimage to the hermitage of Santa Ana located 12 km from Montanejos.

Patron Saint Festival: On July 25, the festival is celebrated in honor of the patron saint of Montanejos, San Jaime. For this occasion, a mass and various folkloric performances are held.

Sports and Cultural Week: The cultural and sports days are celebrated during the second week of August.

Main Festivals: They are celebrated during the first week of September, in honor of the Virgen del Rosario, Virgen de los Desamparados and the Sacred Heart. During this festive week, numerous events are also held, including processions, bullfights, bull runs, toro embolado, and open-air dances.

Sports Facilities:

On the banks of the Mijares River, with wonderful views, is the municipal sports center, where we can find two paddle tennis courts, a fronton court, a futsal field and a basketball court, as well as a park for the little ones. On the other hand, at the entrance to the town there is an area with machines for cardiovascular exercises, surrounded by nature.

Cycle tourism and Hiking routes: there is a network of 11 signposted trails of different durations and difficulties to enjoy the places that surround us as a couple, with friends or with the whole family.

Excursions in the area: in the area there are several tourist attractions of impressive scenic beauty, which are visited by many tourists. Some of the most frequented are the Estrecho de Chillapajaros, La Cueva Negra, Pantano de Arenos, Puebla de Arenos, Olba, and the entire Mijares basin.
